Q: Why is the underwriter so valuable at TW?

A: Your independent agent is local and more likely to understand your unique needs, but each agent has his own in-house underwriter at TW. Although the approach is simple, it is unique in the insurance industry. The agent and underwriter team to come up with an affordable plan that’s right for you. Underwriters play critical roles in every part of the process, starting with the policy itself and right through the claim, often initiated by the underwriter.

“The underwriters know the agents and the agents understand the risks in their areas,” says Todd E. Salsman, TW’s Chief Operating Officer (COO). Jay W. Chadwick, President and Chief Executive Officer, credits “disciplined underwriting” and “easier access to decision making” in this simple but effective approach.

In dealing with claims, TW relies on a network of adjusters with Chief Claims Officer Dave Schweitzer at the helm. Schweitzer says there were about 2,200 claims between TW and Keystone National Insurance Company in the previous year, with in-house adjusters handling about 58 percent of them. The rest are handled by independents, a number of whom have draft authority of up to $5,000 for quick payment of damages.
